Truckee California

Most Lake Tahoe trips center around the lake—its charming beaches, striking blue waters, and inspiring alpine backdrop. It’s undeniably gorgeous, and snapping those postcard-perfect photos is a given.

However, just north lies Truckee, a quaint little mountain town with real pioneer history, a thriving arts scene, and plenty of places to eat along the way. Whether you're passing through or building a whole day around it, here's why Truckee deserves a stopover on your next Lake Tahoe trip.

Explore Historic Downtown Truckee

Downtown Truckee looks like something out of an old Western movie, except everything is real, and nobody's getting into a duel (hopefully). That’s part of the charm. This town got its start as a railroad hub in the 1860s, and much of that character is still standing today. In fact, the Museum of Truckee History, located in the historic Truckee Railroad Depot, is a testament to this legacy.

Alongside these historic landmarks, you’ll find an array of independently-owned businesses, inviting restaurants, and inspiring galleries that perfectly capture Truckee's unique blend of old and new.

Where to Shop

Trade the tourist traps for Truckee's local shops. Word After Word Books is the kind of indie bookstore that invites you to linger and nearly forget your plans. The Sock Parlour is exactly as playful and quirky as it sounds—an entire shop devoted to socks, and somehow it works. Round things out at Riverside Studios, a great local spot to pick up one-of-a-kind art and handmade goods before heading home.

Where to Eat

Let’s be real, this is the best section! Full Belly Deli lives up to its name by serving up hearty, creative sandwiches that regularly top "best of" lists. For a more upscale experience, make a reservation at Moody's Bistro, Bar, & Beats or Pianeta Cucina Italiana. If history and comfort food are what you crave, head to 1882 Bar and Grill. One of Truckee’s oldest buildings houses this charming eatery, complete with a patio showcasing scenic views that pair perfectly with your meal.

Discover Art

Truckee’s place in California’s Cultural District feels well earned. Around town, you’ll find more than 40 murals, sculptures, and installations that reflect both its history and its creative spirit. A few standouts include the whimsical Truckee Ants near Highway 89 and the bright Finding Your Fold mural on Donner Pass Road. Plan a self-guided tour using the town's public art and murals guide!

Venture Off the Beaten Path

Once you’ve explored downtown, it’s worth it to go a little farther. Some of Truckee’s best nature spots are nearby, with scenic trails, lake views, and quiet corners where you and your loved ones can really take in the mountain scenery.

Pro-Tip: Stop by Café Lupine on your way out of town for a delightful micro-roastery that serves up the most adorable lattes and brews to jump-start your day.

Donner Memorial State Park

Just a few minutes from downtown, Donner Memorial State Park blends natural beauty with sobering history. Walk the nature trail, visit the museum, and stand beneath the 1918 Pioneer Monument—which rises 22.5 feet tall, matching the depth of the snow the Donner Party faced in 1846.

Donner Lake West End Beach

Traveling with family? Donner Lake West End Beach is a winner. The calm, shallow water makes it ideal for families, and there's plenty of room to spread out. Keep an eye out for El Dragon, a playful dragon-shaped bike rack inspired by local children’s artwork—it’s a charming touch that embodies Truckee’s community spirit.

Seriously Though, Make Room for Truckee

Lake Tahoe will always be the star of the show, and rightfully so. But Truckee proves there's more to this corner of the Sierras than shoreline. This charming mountain town offers its own unique blend of outdoor adventures, culinary delights, and cultural experiences that make it an unforgettable addition to any Tahoe getaway.
