A Weekend in Tennessee: Smoky Mountain Bigfoot Festival 2022

Do you believe?

In the Great Smoky Mountains, it’s not uncommon to hear tales of a nine-foot-tall hairy creature stalking hikers in the woods, scaring campers, intriguing hunters, and the like. Remind you of something you’ve heard or possibly seen before? That’s right, you guessed it—Bigfoot. Sasquatch. Yeti. Wild Man. Yowie. Sesquac. Skookum. (Our personal favorite, Hide and Seek World Champion.)

It’s a creature of many names, and we’re not talking about “Harry and the Hendersons.” We’re talking about a cryptid. An elusive species rumored to exist, much like the Loch Ness Monster, that has little to no physical evidence to prove it’s real. But that doesn’t stop the alleged sightings, the stories, the folklore, or the festivals.

Many folklorists trace the phenomenon back to sources like the Indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest, but Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountain National Park has consistently been drumming up interest with researchers, enthusiasts, and witnesses; thus, making it the ideal place to hold a Bigfoot festival.
