Cardinal's Cottage

Charming Bay-side cottage w/private deck, BBQ grill & outdoor shower

Become immersed in the untouched beauty of Cape San Blas at this charming 2-bedroom beach cottage, nestled on more than an acre of waterfront property along St. Joseph Bay with oaks, pines and palmettos lining the shores.

Formerly the "Reed Cottage", Cardinal's Cottage is newly renovated from top to bottom. Set upon a raised platform, the cottage welcomes guests through a private, wrap-around deck with new lounge furniture and a glass, four-seat patio table. Sip coffee in the morning to the sound of herons and piping plovers, or fire up the propane grill for dinners with spectacular sunsets. After a day on the water, take advantage of an enclosed outdoor shower, located on the side of the home.

As you enter, a cheerful kitchen area and living room greet you, married by an open floor plan with light streaming through picture windows. In the living area, a comfy sectional sofa faces a hardwood coffee table and flat-screen TV, offering ample space to lounge. The updated kitchen features all-new appliances, a stainless steel sink, four-seat dining table and granite prep counter, re-purposed from a hardwood dresser. The cottage features hand-crafted, whimsical light fixtures throughout, each created from a re-purposed object.

Through a short hallway are two bedrooms, both styled in nautical decor with vintage artwork. The master has a queen-sized bed, twin nightstands and space to hang clothes. The second bedroom has two twin beds, a large picture window, and a washer and dryer -- the ultimate convenience for families.

A full bath lies just outside the bedrooms, featuring tiled floors, a hardwood sink and spacious, walk-in shower. Throughout the home, you’ll enjoy air conditioning and heating, new hardwood floors and new paint, creating a cheerful ambience with modern comforts.

Outside, you’ll find the tranquil atmosphere of the bay, with St. Joseph steps from your door, easily accessible from a community boardwalk. Stroll along the beach in search of starfish and sea grass, spend a lazy afternoon kayaking on the bay’s tranquil waters, or watch spectacular sunsets over the water from the comfort of your West-facing deck. Within a short drive are wildlife preserves, birdwatching sites and national forests, allowing you to explore the varied, natural beauty of Cape San Blas.

For a night “out,” you’ll find some of the area’s best restaurants within short drive, each offering fresh seafood and local charm. Our team of Cape San Blas locals can give you their favorite recommendations.

However you choose to experience Cape San Blas, Cardinal's Cottage is an ideal homebase for guests who want front-row access to the water and modern amenities without sacrificing authentic cottage charm.
The property is dog friendly with an additional fee.

Below is a snippet from the owner as to why the name was changed from Reed Cottage to Cardinal's Cottage:

On October 10th 2018 Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 Hurricane made landfall at Mexico Beach. A seven foot storm surge flooded St. Joseph's Bay in 15 minutes. The surge caused this house to start to float. This house was saved by a tree that fell onto the roof , pinning it to the foundation.
A Cardinal (bird) is said to represent a visit from a past loved one. Legend has it that this cottage was saved from destruction by our loved ones. So, in honor of their efforts, a new name and a place for them to hang out will forever be called the "Cardinal's Cottage".

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Peaceful My husband and I visited Cardinals Cottage in early October and it was a wonderful vacation. Serene, peaceful, relaxing, comfortable and secluded have been some of our favorite ways to describe it to our friends. We enjoyed exploring the bay, observing the locals aka marine life, visiting the beaches in Cape San Blas, and then returning to relax in this gorgeous little cottage. The one thing that surprised me, because I am not a morning person, was how much I loved watching the sunrise from the boardwalk. I highly recommend you wake up early, at least once, during your visit and experience it yourself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal! This little cottage was perfect for our getaway. My husband and I stayed here with our two dogs and loved every second. The cottage is exactly as it appears in the photos (which is not always the case with rentals). We loved the decor, the comfortable bed, the outdoor shower, the porch, and the dock/pier that we used to access the bay. The kitchen, though small, was better equipped than any kitchen of any other beach rental we have ever had. There were ample pots and pans, utensils, mixing bowls, two coffee pots, and even a hand mixer! It is very dog friendly with the hard floors throughout. We loved the privacy and spent several afternoons with chairs out on the dock enjoying our dogs and shallows of the bay. Wildlife was abundant. There are many starter supplies that we have not experienced with other rentals: ground coffee, salt & pepper, soaps for laundry, dishes, and skin, ample towels, paper towels, toilet tissue, and liquid soaps at the sinks. There were even supplies to wipe the counter tops! It truly is the eye for the little details that make this place wonderful. For example, they had lights on and music playing for us when we arrived as we came in well after sunset. So, we were not stumbling about an unfamiliar place trying to blindly locate switches. The ONLY thing I can think of that could make this place any better would be to screen part of the porch for the warm months when insects are as abundant as the love poured into the creation of this space. With that said, there are two citronella candles on the porch and bugs will not carry you off to make dinner of you in mid October. I really hope to return in the near future. This is THE BEST experience we have had yet.
