Rated 3 out of 5 by from Only OK We were a group of six staying in this home for a wedding. The views from the home are great, and it is conveniently located near the Lake Toxaway CC. However, based on the price and my expectations, the home fell short in several areas. 1. The decor is somewhat unattractive and dated. The interior of the home is worse in person than it is in pictures. Some of this is admittedly a question of taste; but some is not. Some furniture, furnishings, etc. are simply dated or worn, and I was surprised to find that for roughly $900/nt out of season. 2. The towels ALL had a mildewy smell, and we could not get rid of it even after washing them on the hottest setting of the washing machine. In addition, the towels generally do not match and are somewhat frayed, etc. I would have expected some level of quality control from Natural Retreats even though the home is privately owned. 3. The sauna is a nice touch, but the odd layout of the basement makes it somewhat awkward to use unless you are sleeping downstairs -- the entire lower level is basically a master suite. This was OK for our group, but might cause issues for a larger group. If you're staying in the bedroom downstairs, you have to walk the length of the house to get to the one lower level restroom, and this is where the sauna is. 4. The lake is quite shallow off the dock. Just keep that in mind depending on when you're planning to visit and what kind of water activities you plan to do. It is unsafe to jump off the dock. 5. The beds were all uncomfortable and it became quite cold downstairs during the 50ish degree nights we spent there. Some of the beds were pretty short, as well. On a positive note, Natural Retreats was a great company to work with throughout the booking process, etc. They also called to make sure a package was delivered, after the owner received a notification that an attempt had been made. This was great service, but in a way, it makes it all the more disappointing that the house had what are, in my opinion, avoidable problems. I have written probably 20-30 reviews of homes and hotels, and I have to say, this is probably the most negative one I have written. I'm usually not the kind of person who finds fault with every little thing. I just think the home either needs a refresh, or they need to lower the price to put the value more in line with what you actually receive. All in all, the house served our needs from a location standpoint, but I'd be inclined to look elsewhere for future stays.
