Lake Tahoe: The Great Family Escape
Cedar Crest Cottages- Our Home Away From Home
We reserved a stylish Eagle Cottage at Cedar Crest. One of the highlights of this charming cottage is the gorgeous view of the lake. We chose Eagle Cottage based on the impressive stone fireplace in the center of the room. Our days in Tahoe were warm, but the evenings were chilly. Most nights, we sat at the table and played cards, feeling the warmth of the fireplace. When we arrived, we immediately felt at home.
For our family, literally everything we needed for this vacation was right there in the cottage. We purchased groceries at Safeway on the way into town. We enjoyed cooking together as a family and eating meals on the deck while admiring the view of Big Blue.
The cottage came with a large paddleboard and towels. Directly across the street from Cedar Crest Cottages, we found a small stretch of public beach that enabled us to take turns paddle boarding while taking in the grandeur of Lake Tahoe. We spent most of our days on the lake, enjoying the serenity of the calm water.
Family Fun Activities in Tahoe
Aside from chilling in our lovely Cedar Crest Cottage, we did manage to check out a few activities in Tahoe. For kids, Woodward Lake Tahoe is a wonderland of action sports filled with trampolines, foam pits, an indoor skatepark, ramps, and drops. Outdoors, there are lift-accessed downhill mountain bike trails and a network of skate parks in the summer. We booked a session at Woodward and watched the kids jump, flip and twist into the soft foam pit.
For all-around family fun, Incline Shopping Village created a fun outing filled with locally owned boutiques containing handmade items from local artisans, sports shops, art studios and more. While we didn’t have time for more activities, we found there were so many other things to do, such as outdoor concerts, horseback rides, ziplining, arcades, mini-golf, watersports along the lake, hiking, and biking.
Day Trip to Truckee
If you’re in Lake Tahoe, nearby Truckee is a fun family excursion. Located north of Lake Tahoe in just 20 minutes away from downtown, Truckee is a charming mountain town with loads of hidden gems and outdoor activities. Downtown Truckee is a must-see, with dozens of independently owned shops, eateries, museums, and more. Outdoor activities include the Truckee Bike Park, Donner Lake Watersports & Marina where you can rent paddle boards, kayaks and canoes, and loads of hiking and biking trails.
Getting away together as a family gave us the gift of time to simply enjoy each other and be on vacation. With two teens who enjoy their screen time, it was extremely refreshing to watch them being kids again, running around on the beach and skipping rocks. They even took time to teach this mom how to skip rocks!
Our time at Cedar Crest Cottages was magical and we plan to make our stay an annual family tradition. Given the cottages are all decorated differently, we will likely try different cottages each year until we decide on a favorite. That’s the beauty of Cedar Crest Cottages. Everything we needed was there. A vacation home is truly a home when it's filled with family.
