Five Ways to Celebrate Mom in the Smokies
Celebrate Mom with the family this Mother's Day in the Great Smoky Mountains. Not only are the Smokies one of the most family-friendly destinations in the U.S., they also offer a host experiences for moms of all types. Following are our some of our favorites :
Clingmans Dome: Great Smoky Mountains National Park
It is not surprising that the Smoky Mountains are a favorite destination of "outdoorsy" moms, or that Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the county’s most visited national parks. Here Mom can enjoy abundant flora and fauna, stunning waterfalls and scenic drives. The park is also a hiker's paradise! For moms who love a challenging hike, we recommend a climb to Clingmans Dome. Soaring to a height of 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in the park, and in Tennessee itself. The observation tower atop the dome offers stellar 360-degree views of the park. To get there, take the scenic drive along Clingmans Dome Road, which terminates at a parking lot. From there, it’s a steep half mile hike to the top along a fully paved trail. Once at the summit, you’ll find that the hike was well worth it. On rare clear days, visibility can be up to 100 miles.
The Rocky Top Wine Trail
Is your mom a wine connoisseur? If so, we suggest a taking a drive along the Rocky Top Wine Trail. Composed of five wineries and one distillery, the trail is free to do. Simply begin at one of the wineries on this list and pick up a "passport" which will be stamped at each winery along the way. Collect three stamps and receive a free gift. Should you choose to complete the entire trail, you will receive a second gift. Wine tastings are free at every location and several of the participating wineries offer free tours so that Mom can get a first-hand look at the wine-making process.
Treat Mom to a shopping spree at one of the many malls and specialty shops in the area. The Island is ideal for souvenir’s, unique clothing and home décor. While you're there, take the family for a ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, and enjoy the spectacular view. The Village, located in downtown Gatlinburg, features twenty-seven European-village style shops that carry national brands, as well as local artisan products. Finally, the Tanger Outlet in Sevierville is the perfect place to take the budget conscious mom.
An in-cabin massage is the ultimate pampering experience. There are several masseurs in-and-around Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville that can provide 60 or 90-minute massages in the privacy of your rental cabin. Weather permitting, massage tables can be set up on the deck or balcony so that Mom can enjoy the stunning mountain views, fresh air and the tranquil sounds of nature while having her massage.
Is your mom a self-professed foodie? If so, we suggest hiring a local chef to prepare a gourmet meal for her in the privacy of your rental cabin. Mom will appreciate not having to cook for the family on her special day, and she’ll get to enjoy a fantastic meal catered specifically to her tastes.
