Cornwall's Greatest Secret Gardens

The wonderful news just in is, Spring has finally sprung! So, in association with Visit England’s ‘2016 Year of the English Garden’ we’ve cherry-picked our favourite, fantastic open spaces for you to discover this Easter. Pack up your mini-explorers, your four-legged friends and the grandparents too, and head South for the finest English Gardens Cornwall has to offer…

Stepping into the sub-tropical Estate of Heligan (just 10 minutes through the beautiful countryside from Natural Retreats Trewhiddle), rediscover one of Cornwall's most magical and romantic estates where a sprawling secret garden was lost for decades. With the grounds dating back over 400 years, Heligan is steeped in history, losing it's way mid-WWI where many of the garden staff went off to fight in the trenches of Europe until 75 years later it was incredibly rediscovered by Tim Smit and John Willis.

There are a myriad of adventures for visitors to enjoy including one of Britain's longest Burmese rope bridges, Cornwall's only outdoor jungle, the Honeybee Observation Hive, the Lost Valley and Ancient Woodlands, iconic Heligan sculptures including the Mud Maid and a wide selection of farmyard animals including Tamworth pigs foraging for nuts!

For hungry explorers, the Heligan kitchen is something to behold. The 200 acre estate, provides them with a wide variety of fresh produce and home-reared meat to create hearty seasonal dishes for visitors to enjoy including summer BBQ's, fresh pasties, heart winter stews and much more. It’s a minimal 157 food yards from soil to plate; it doesn’t get much fresher!

The legendary biomes of this world-wide phenomenon prove the perfect location to take the whole family, as there truly is an interactive activity for all to enjoy. Located just 15 minutes from our self-catering villas in the picturesque Pentewan valley, enjoy even more time exploring, without worrying about entertaining your little ones on tiresome and stressful car journeys.

From the humid rainforest where you trek through lifelike jungle paths (dodging the roul-roul partridge chicks and sniffing out the cocoa pods), to the temperate beauty of the Mediterranean biome where you float through olive groves and revel in the beauty of the European climate, an entire day can be spent exploring this fascinating project. For daredevils, take a climb through the Canopy Walkway or head outdoors to SkyWire (England's longest zip-wire).

Once you've explored the natural beauty the gardens have to offer, head to the Eden Kitchen restaurant for some of the most delicious handmade dishes you've ever set your eyes on. Every day is different, but you’ll always find a fine selection of food including handmade pastries in the morning, savoury dishes at lunchtime and amazing cakes and scones in the afternoon. From pulled Cornish pork-belly burritos, to sumac-roasted chicken breast and sustainably sourced fish-cakes, dine in style amongst the pretty outdoor gardens.

20 minutes in the car from your luxurious holiday hideaway at Natural Retreats, lies the sublime beauty and fascinating mysteries of Caerhays Castle. Nestled right on the Cornish coast, this cultural wonder has direct access to Porthluney Beach and is a great place to blend seaside fun with a little horticultural discovery.

The castle gardens recently won the 'Historic Houses Association Garden of the Year Award' and it's really not difficult to see why. Home to a National Magnolia Collection, the gardens are a spring-time wonderland for visitors, with 120-acres of blissful Cornish landscapes to take in at your leisure. There are signposted walks around this beautiful garden, giving unforgettable views out over the estate and grounds, the lake, and out to sea. Plus, four-legged friends on leads are very much welcome and children under 5 can visit for free!
