The Best of Lake Toxaway

When going on vacation, it’s important to hit all of the best restaurants, attractions, and activities before it’s time to head home. On my last visit to Lake Toxaway, I made sure to experience the best the area has to offer and I’ve complied some of my favorites to make your planning easier. Take it from me, you’ll want to check out these activities and restaurants during your next stay in Lake Toxaway.

Best Barbeque
This one is tough, but I have to say that I’m partial to Hawg Wild Barbeque. If your mouth is watering for traditional southern barbecue, this local eatery smokes all of their meats on-site, guaranteeing fresh entrees and satisfied taste buds. My favorite is the smoked barbeque with the western sauce. Absolutely delicious!

Most Unique Activity
Only seen from mid-October to November, “The Shadow of the Bear” is created from the mountain peaks casting a shadow in the shape of a bear on the fall foliage as the sun sets. It can only be seen for only 30 minutes, starting at 5:30pm, so make sure you plan your outing accordingly. For the best view, head to Rhodes Big Overlook off of Highway 64! Don’t forget your camera.

Best Family Activity
Round up the family and check out the Dupont Falls Tour. Just over a half a mile long, you’ll get to tour five of the area’s waterfalls within Dupont State Park. Looking for more of a challenge? Make a day of your waterfall adventure and tackle the 3.2 mile long Graveyard Fields Trail, featuring grassy meadows and beautiful waterfalls along the way.

Best Ice Cream Stop
When have to satisfy your sweet tooth, head to Rocky’s Grill and Soda Shop in Brevard, North Carolina. My go-to is the famous Rocky’s Shake and I love the family-friendly, 50’s atmosphere. With an entire menu full of sweet treats, you’ll have something new to choose from every night.

Best Coffee
In need of a caffeine kick? Embrace the morning with a trip to Appalachian Coffee Company in Brevard. Sip on freshly-roasted coffee done up any way you like! I recommend the Creation Breakfast Roast, I even bought my own to bring home!

Best Day Trip
Load up the car and take the short, hour-long drive to downtown Ashville to shop, and explore the incredible Biltmore Estate! I can arrange your tickets in advance, so you’ll have access to the beautiful grounds, including a garden walk, a complementary wine tasting (21 and up of course), and a tour of the home. It’s definitely worth the visit.

Most Adventurous Activity
Feel your adrenaline spike as you navigate your way down the Nantahala River. Rolling Thunder River Company offers exciting rafting tours with knowledgeable guides to help you along the way. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new!

Best Place to Take a Swing
Dust off your clubs and see how you do on the fairway. The Lake Toxaway Country Club has a beautiful 18-hole golf course, the perfect way to start the day! Once you finish up your round, the Country Club’s 19th Hole is a great pit stop to have a drink, or lunch. If you’re like me and need some help with your game, PGA professional Lou Biago is on-site to give lessons!

I hope you enjoy your next Lake Toxaway vacation, and be sure to call me if you want any more insight about my local favorites!

Safe travels!
