5 Items You Should Pack for a Smoky Mountain Winter Adventure

It seems easy to get overwhelmed when packing for vacation- especially during the winter time. Of course, your toothbrush, a warm coat, and your coziest pair of socks are on the packing list, but will you remember the smaller items that will help make your getaway that much more enjoyable? Rest assured, we’ve compiled our top five packing items that will make your Great Smoky Mountain vacation truly the highlight of the winter season.

Portable Phone Charger
We hate to say it, but we depend on cell phones quite a bit. They’re our direct line to a map, a ride, and our loved ones. We’re not promoting being on your phone during vacation, but we definitely think you should be prepared in case you need it- especially if you venture up to Ober Gatlinburg for a full day of snow tubing. In the event you get separated from your group while barreling down the hill, you don’t want to be stuck with a dead phone and no way to get in touch with them. Ease your worries and keep a portable charger handy!

Insulated Hiking Boots
The trees may be bare and the air may be brisk, but winter offers some of the most beautifully serene hiking opportunities in the Smokies. The trails might be snow-covered, so it’s important to bring proper footwear. Insulated hiking boots are the best option to ensure your feet will stay warm and dry for the duration of your trek. Alum Cave Trail is our favorite to explore during the winter season. Download an app like All Trails to help you navigate your way.

Your Favorite Book
After a day full of fun and activities, the evening is the perfect time to decompress and take some time to enjoy the quiet. Pack your favorite book and find a spot next to the fireplace for a dreamy evening in your authentic log cabin. Not sure where you should stay? Don’t worry, we have you covered. Check out these cabins, replete with gorgeous fireplaces and plenty of comfortable seating for the whole family.

A Cozy Blanket
Smoky Mountain Winterfest is in full swing and even though the holiday season has technically passed, there is still plenty to celebrate. Complete with impressive holiday light displays, this annual event will help you keep the magic of the holidays well into February. Why pack a blanket? You can drive through the Winterfest light display, which means it’s time to make the car as cozy as possible. Crank up the heat, bring some hot chocolate in a to-go cup, and wrap up in your blanket while you enjoy the twinkling lights.

Extra Spending Money
A true vacation would not be complete without bringing home a souvenir or two, and you would be missing out if you didn’t make a stop at the Great Smoky Arts & Craft Community. It’s one of the largest independent artisans craft communities in the country and is full of incredible works of art, from pottery and paintings to jewelry and crochet. Not only will you have the chance to bring a little bit of the Smokies home with you, but you’ll be supporting the local artists that help make the community what it is.
