Cycling in the Yorkshire Dales

With rugged moors and soft rolling dales, Yorkshire serves up helpings of English countryside at its most iconic. Add in pretty stone hamlets, historic market towns, imposing castles, walking trails and cosy pubs, and you have a county that delivers a wealth of holiday pleasures.

Natural Retreats Yorkshire Dales is situated in a stunning location, enveloped within fifty-four acres of pristine Swaledale countryside. Tucked into the hills, with panoramic views, the lodges are perfect for a relaxing and peaceful country escape, yet are only a short walk from the idyllic market town of Richmond.

This dramatic landscape provided the perfect setting for the world’s biggest bike race  – The Tour de France – which started in Yorkshire in July 2014. It was the first time Le Tour  has visited the north of England having previously only made visits to the south coast and the capital.

With this spectacular event on everybody’s mind, cycling in Yorkshire is now bigger than ever before, with an abundance of published information. The Yorkshire Dales National Park, long a favourite with cyclists, has benefitted from an improved cycling infrastructure to help make your cycling stay a great one. Set in the heart of the Dales, Natural Retreats is perfectly placed to explore the world-class local routes, or even try your hand at the nearby Étape du Dales itself.

This year, Natural Retreats celebrates its tenth birthday, so we thought it timely to have a double celebration. Yorkshire Dales was our first Retreat, and we can’t think of a better location to park your bike than these wonderful eco-lodges.

Let us guide you through this incredible region and all our Retreat has to offer. So, what are you waiting for? On yer bike!

Richmond Double Loop (31m/50km)
A nice double loop around Swaledale and Arkengarthdale, taking in the best the Dales have to offer, passing through woodland and riverside. Enjoy gentle climbs from Richmond to Reeth, heading to the Punch Bowl for some great views over the hills. Head back up those steep climbs returning to Reeth, with some really rewarding (and peaceful) countryside views.

Richmond Cyclo Sportive (98m/158km)

The legendary ride that takes you through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. As spectacularly beautiful as it is brutally tough, this popular route is a wonderful tour of the Dales with some of the hardest climbs around, like Fleet Moss and Park Rash. Certainly a challenging ride but one for the bucket list! With so many café stops in Richmond, Tan Hill, Kirkby Stephen, Hawes, Kettlewell, Leyburn – you can enjoy the delights of Wensleydale around each turn. You’ll be burning it off anyway.

Aske & Easby Loop (22m/35km)

A nice easy, mixed route of road and off-road bits. The route starts by heading left out of Natural Retreats on the Hurgill Road, carrying on through stunning woodland areas, which can get fast and rocky near the end, until field crossings dominate the route. Heading towards Richmond, look out for the historical remains of Easby Abbey. A particular highlight is a section following the old train line, which then terminates at Richmond’s food and culture hotspot, The Station.
