After spending a restful night in your well-appointed room, take a step out onto your own private terrace and fill your lungs with pure Rocky Mountain air. This is a surefire way to get your day off to a great start. Breakfast is served from 7am to 8am in the Main Lodge. A short walk down the hall, or outside past the casting pond, brings you to the breakfast table, where our morning Chef will have all the goodies you want to fuel your system. Imagine how nice it is to sit in our spectacular dining room with large soaring windows, drink your coffee, enjoy a hearty breakfast, and know that you are only a stone's throw from the world famous South Fork of the Snake River; other anglers still have a long drive just to get to where you are. So sit back, read the paper, enjoy the moment, and take comfort that while others are on a frantic time schedule you are anticipating the day the old fashioned way.
While you are eating breakfast, your guide is busy getting everything ready for your productive drift boat experience. Between 8:30am and 9am, the South Fork Outfitters Fly Shop, located within walking distance of the Lodge, is where you will meet your guide and get acquainted. You will typically purchase an assortment of flies or get stocked up on the big hitter for the day. Your guide has the inside scoop of what was working the day before, and will ensure you are armed with the best selection to keep your line tight. The Fly Shop is a busy place in the morning since it is the most popular shop on the river; but having your guide right there with you makes you feel like the VIP. He or she can also give you good advice on any new fly-fishing gear or clothing you need for before hitting the river around 9:30am.
Equipped with anywhere from a 4 weight to a 6 weight fly rod, you will start working the banks, riffles, and side channels of a world class tailwater. The river enjoys a remarkable number of different insect hatches throughout the season including the famous Salmon Fly Hatch where the fish gorge on large flies and unforgettable memories are created. Until you have experienced casting big dry flies to hungry and aggressive fish, you haven't pegged your fun meter. But the excitement is not limited to just this one hatch, or this one time of year. The hatches are so abundant all season that it really doesn't matter when you are on the water. And we know that the largest food source is actually under the surface, so in addition to the dry fly action, we also spend time nymph fishing when appropriate.
Fishing with us, you enjoy all the advantages of casting from a drift boat including longer and better fly presentations, the ability to easily travel to and from good wade fishing spots (especially in the fall season), and having food and drinks within easy reach. Partnered with a seasoned guide, you will be put on fish throughout the day; but don't forget to stop, look around, and take in the surrounding beauty of the river corridor. The fishing is paramount, but without taking it all in, you would short change yourself. A good time for soaking it all in is lunch; you will eat a Lodge prepared lunch in the cool shade of a Cottonwood grove or other appropriate setting along the river, and maybe enjoy a quick nap. But, there are days when lunch is eaten on the float and between casts just to stay in the middle of a great hatch. It is all about connecting with the river and its rhythms.
The productive river day typically comes to an end around 5:30pm after a short drive back to the Lodge from any number of possible take-out points. The imported tile bathrooms and terry robes add a luxurious feel to your time spent cleaning up from the day and before gathering with like-minded anglers from around the world on the Riverside Patio or Card Room for a cocktail before dinner. Occasional guest speakers may also be present. This nightly gathering produces lasting friendships, assorted tales, and the authentic lodge atmosphere our guests seek.
Dinner is usually served from 6pm to 9pm, featuring delectable entrees selected from a unique rotating menu created by our Chef. Your server, as needed, can help you choose from an extensive wine list designed to complement the fine cuisine. The intimate Dining Room and outdoor Patio are so unique and pleasant that you may want to linger long after you complete your meal, and you can, because the entire Lodge is here just for you. You also have the Card Room Bar and Guest Lounge area as options along with the privacy of your own room. Your room is always a welcome retreat and refuge to relive the memories of the day and get the needed rest to do it all again at sunrise. Enjoy.
