Self Catering Luxury Holidays Kilronan Castle - Ireland

You can sense the history here: Kilronan comes from the Gaelic 'Cill Ronain', which means Ronan's Abbey, the ruins of which are close by, as well as St Ronan's Holy well and the hollow stone he used for the baptism of his followers. The original Castle was built in the early 1800's and belonged to Colonel King Tenison. It was extended by the 12th Earl of Kingston in 1876 with a five storey over basement baronial tower and battlements.

The region of Roscommon was famous for music in ancient times and Ireland's greatest harpist, Turlough O'Carolan, is buried nearby. He was welcomed into the castles of Irish Chieftains like the O'Rourkes of Breifne and his music will live on in special events planned for Kilronan.

This is the region from which the artists, poets and musicians emerged, including Kavanagh, Yeats, McGanern, O'Carolan and Percy French. It is the cradle of the establishment of the Gaelic League, which did so much to restore the cultural life of Ireland.

Kilronan Castle Estate

Grandeur and elegance meet you on arrival: the long tree-lined drive to the castle, amid the wooded grounds and with the lake always in view, is an impressive and picturesque first sight.

Over €50 million has been spent in transforming Kilronan Castle into one of the most desirable country estates in the country. Local and international craftsmen were recruited in order to bring the Castle back to its former splendour. Experts in stonework, ancient crafts and stained glass worked here on the restoration project, which paid meticulous attention to detail. This is evident on entering the castle, where you will see a spectacular set of four 19th Century French stained glass panels depicting knights and maidens.

This attention to detail was continued when furnishing the Castle. Every piece of furniture, art work and adornment are all original items and sure to attract art lovers and antiques enthusiasts alike. Sourced by antiques experts, the French 19th century fireplace, with an original painting by Desvarrear, in the reception area is of particular significance. Beautifully restored, the fireplace and painting together are valued at approximately €250,000.
